Summary

Investigating one murder ties the man to a rape, which leads to investigating a inherited disease and whether there are children。 Jar city is where organs being studied are kept。

I enjoyed the book, though the plot was pretty straightforward and the pacing was slow。 I wish the author had given me more of a puzzle to chew on, with more information paced throughout。 However, I enjoy reading about Iceland and its people/culture, and I also think it’s a physically beautiful and evocative setting。 I plan to read the next novel in the series!

did not finish。。。。hard for me to get very interested in the plot。

police detective story set in Reyjavik。

A slow-burner but a good introduction to Detective Erlendur。

I love Scandinavian crime noir novels and Icelandic authors seem to really know how to use the genre masterfully。 This is actually the third novel in Arnaldur Indridason's Inspector Erlendeur series but it was the first to be translated into English。 I read the whole series many years ago and thought I would read the first one again, forgetting that it is not really the first one。It was still a very enjoyable read。 The police procedural aspect is very intriguing with a unique Icelandic twist bas I love Scandinavian crime noir novels and Icelandic authors seem to really know how to use the genre masterfully。 This is actually the third novel in Arnaldur Indridason's Inspector Erlendeur series but it was the first to be translated into English。 I read the whole series many years ago and thought I would read the first one again, forgetting that it is not really the first one。It was still a very enjoyable read。 The police procedural aspect is very intriguing with a unique Icelandic twist based on the fact that the population of Iceland is relatively homogenous compared to other countries in Europe。 The glimpses into Icelandic culture are very interesting and the portrayal of the characters is complex and fascinating。 Occasionally, I was aware of the fact that I was reading a translation but that is not the author's fault。 。。。more

A very solid Nordic-type Detective story。 Lots of bleak, dreary weather, smoker's cough, and dark deeds。 The characters are interesting but it was sometimes tough for me to keep track of everyone's names。 I would definitely read more by this author。 A very solid Nordic-type Detective story。 Lots of bleak, dreary weather, smoker's cough, and dark deeds。 The characters are interesting but it was sometimes tough for me to keep track of everyone's names。 I would definitely read more by this author。 。。。more

Poor Erlendur never gets enough information at a time and has to keep going back to the same people to drag more out of them。 But it helps build the suspense and keeps it interesting。 I would have liked to begin this series with the FIRST book in the series, but Scandinavian lit is translated and released starting with the THIRD book。 GO figure。 Hope to someday get to read the first two。 Interesting look at rape and its aftereffects, as well as genetically inherited disease。

I was going to Iceland for a few days so I wanted something that would give me a sense of the place in advance。 Nordic noir seemed appropriate。 It’s a straightforward detective story, easy to follow with a somewhat predictable, albeit no less satisfying, conclusion。 Thankfully no one was murdered while I was on the trip and I would consider reading the follow ups in this series。

Was hoping for a strong portrayal of Iceland, but was disappointed -- the story could have taken place anywhere。

As a not really big fan of reading, i was really really fascinated of this book! I've never read before a book with that much action and mistery。 Woah, a book that will be forever in my mind。 Amazing。 I have no words! I recoman this book for everyone who want's to see how Island's crimes go like! As a not really big fan of reading, i was really really fascinated of this book! Pirmā grāmata, ko izlasu nedēļas laikā。 Parasti vajadzēja mēnesi vai divus, bet grāmata ir tiešām aizraujošs kriminālromāns, tikai žēl, ka beigas bija ļoti nojaušamas un nebija pārsteiguma momenta。

There was something starkly compelling about the writing and emotional-overflow to the MC here。 The plot was convoluted, detailed passages came only at unnecessary times, and the side characters were cardboard, yet I still enjoyed the painful humanity of this read。

This is the first of the Raykjavik Murder Mysteries starring Detective Erlandur by Arnaldur Indridason。 It has been talked a lot on a Nordic Crime page I belong to on facebook, so I thought I'd see what the fuss was about。I have to admit to being underwhelmed。。。 or maybe just 'whelmed'? The pace is slow and the characters paper-thin。 I know no more about Erlander than when I started apart from the fact that he has an addict for a daughter who is far more interesting than he is。Many comments on r This is the first of the Raykjavik Murder Mysteries starring Detective Erlandur by Arnaldur Indridason。 It has been talked a lot on a Nordic Crime page I belong to on facebook, so I thought I'd see what the fuss was about。I have to admit to being underwhelmed。。。 or maybe just 'whelmed'?

I liked this book - it was an interesting mystery with complex and flawed characters, including Erlendur。 There were a few problems that kept me from loving the book, but overall it was an interesting read。 (view spoiler)[The murder victim was a terrible person, so I really didn't care if Erlendur figured out who killed him - I was glad the man was dead and that's an odd thing for a mystery novel。 (hide spoiler)] I liked this book - it was an interesting mystery with complex and flawed characters, including Erlendur。 There were a few problems that kept me from loving the book, but overall it was an interesting read。 (view spoiler)[The murder victim was a terrible person, so I really didn't care if Erlendur figured out who killed him - I was glad the man was dead and that's an odd thing for a mystery novel。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

'Jar City' by Arnaldur Indridason is a Nordic noir set in Reykjavik, Iceland, which in itself is interesting as I haven't read many books which use this city。 It's a gripping, tension-filled story that is unashamedly brutal and quite chilling at times, with some images that made me downright queasy。 But there's humour, too。 The characters are drawn with sensitivity and, in some cases, a deep affection。 The investigation itself was intelligently plotted and kept me guessing。 This is the third in 'Jar City' by Arnaldur Indridason is a Nordic noir set in Reykjavik, Iceland, which in itself is interesting as I haven't read many books which use this city。 It's a gripping, tension-filled story that is unashamedly brutal and quite chilling at times, with some images that made me downright queasy。 But there's humour, too。 The characters are drawn with sensitivity and, in some cases, a deep affection。 The investigation itself was intelligently plotted and kept me guessing。 This is the third in a series but it didn't seem to matter that I had not read the others。 。。。more

This book is just okay。The story itself is fairly tight and certainly there are no wasted words, but the way that it's delivered leaves a lot to be desired。 I didn't realize the author was a journalist before I read the other reviews, but now the one-dimensional, uninvested, and unemotional narration makes sense。 For me, though, it kept me from becoming invested in the story。The other major thing was that clearly, the investigation unfolded too conveniently; he chases down a random rabbit hole a This book is just okay。The story itself is fairly tight and certainly there are no wasted words, but the way that it's delivered leaves a lot to be desired。 I didn't realize the author was a journalist before I read the other reviews, but now the one-dimensional, uninvested, and unemotional narration makes sense。 For me, though, it kept me from becoming invested in the story。The other major thing was that clearly, the investigation unfolded too conveniently; he chases down a random rabbit hole and it happens to be central in the case - now repeat this 20 times。 It's such an unbelievable part of such an otherwise believable crime。Other minor gripes: some characters literally ended up being in the story for no reason than to give Elendur clues; case was actually solved very early; there was no suspense; names of characters were too similar to one another, especially the female characters; too many minor characters had names; main character is a terrible father and it was really hard to like him。 。。。more

Mystery in IcelandThis is a most enthralling story, gripping from the beginning to the end。 A great author with the ability to make you feel you were there with him。

Inspector Erlendur Sveinsson is a seasoned and talented crime investigator。 We realize this early on in the story when his intuition tells him that there is more to the murder of a seventy-year-old man in his basement suite than the mundane surroundings might suggest。 This is a theme that is repeated over and over again in this story, and while almost everyone else is prone to discount the fragmented clues as unimportant to the case, Erlendur does the opposite。 I really liked him as a character, Inspector Erlendur Sveinsson is a seasoned and talented crime investigator。 We realize this early on in the story when his intuition tells him that there is more to the murder of a seventy-year-old man in his basement suite than the mundane surroundings might suggest。 This is a theme that is repeated over and over again in this story, and while almost everyone else is prone to discount the fragmented clues as unimportant to the case, Erlendur does the opposite。 I really liked him as a character, and the story itself held me from start to finish。 I’m looking forward to my next Arlandur Indridason novel。 。。。more

This was my second book in the genre of Icelandic Noir。 I listened to the book and it was narrated by George Guidall。 I found his voice very familiar and it turns out he also narrates books by Daniel Silva。 I had recently listened to The Order。 Guidall is an excellent narrator。 This book however was too dark for me。 It took place is Rekjavik - but could have been anywhere。 The subjects included rape, murder and family secrets, but in a very depressing and not very hopeful way。 The writing style This was my second book in the genre of Icelandic Noir。 I listened to the book and it was narrated by George Guidall。 I found his voice very familiar and it turns out he also narrates books by Daniel Silva。 I had recently listened to The Order。 Guidall is an excellent narrator。 This book however was too dark for me。 It took place is Rekjavik - but could have been anywhere。 The subjects included rape, murder and family secrets, but in a very depressing and not very hopeful way。 The writing style was very good, but I did not like the story。 I will still look for more, but I want to find books which incorporate the incredible scenery, legends and Icelandic customs。 I enjoyed the Ari Thor book much more which in retrospect might have been more of an Icelandic cozy mystery。 。。。more
